Our client sought to reimagine and extend this period property in the heart of Notting Hill, creating a home that balanced the period feeling of the area with a bold, modern aesthetic. As the building was located within a conservation area, securing planning permission was a crucial first step in the process. The design needed to respect the historical context of the neighborhood while introducing high-quality materials and thoughtful spatial planning to enhance everyday living.
THE APPROACH

Given the property’s location in a conservation area, careful planning was required to ensure compliance with Westminster Council’s regulations. Collaborating with architectural consultants, detailed plans were submitted and refined before approval was granted.
The property originally featured a traditional butterfly roof, a common architectural detail in Notting Hill’s Victorian terraces. To maximise space, a mansard extension was introduced—one of the most structurally complex forms of loft conversions, as it requires replacing the original roof with a new structure that expands the upper level while remaining sympathetic to the building’s original proportions. This approach allowed for full-height rooms with vertical windows, creating a natural flow of light throughout the home.
The interiors were designed to complement the historical framework while embracing contemporary materials and finishes. Bespoke joinery, handcrafted detailing, and a sophisticated palette of natural textures—ranging from warm timbers to refined stone and metal accents—bring a sense of depth and personality to each space. Thoughtful architectural interventions, such as open-plan living areas and carefully framed sightlines, ensure the home feels expansive yet intimate.
